Projet: Vocational school Makunduchi

2017: First full season

  • December 2017 marks the hostel's first full season
  • The rooms are ready
  • Sanitary facilities in all rooms
  • The outdoor areas are also finished
  • Of course, nothing has changed in the wonderful surrounding environment
  • Local craftsmen have worked according to their tradition
  • The wall to the neighbouring property was decorated
  • The youth hostel has been recognised as a training centre for our vocational schools.
  • The youth hostel opened its doors in June
  • Premises, such as the breakfast room, the work areas and the outdoor area are ready

2016: Registration Youth Hostel

September: As about two thirds of the buildings are finished by now, we plan to open the youth hostel in October. Registrations can be made via Registration Youth Hostel Zanzibar.

  • The rooms on the ground floor and the sanitary facilities are ready
  • In the second yellow building (at the back), the rooms on the upper floor are finished, but not yet
  • In the third building, the rooms are ready. The electricity is still missing
  • In the white building (opposite the yellow one) the rooms are ready, electricity not, sanitation partly
  • One building is not yet finished. But the building material is already on site
  • The shell of the grey building is finished. The interior work is underway

2015: Official opening Part 1

  • Formal opening (operational business starts in April 2016)
  • Christmas 2015/16 almost the entire board and our auditor were on site in Zanzibar. The progress of the construction was recorded, interior fittings and solar panels were commissioned. Final signatures approved and last motions were made. Future staff members were selected and hired.
  • In the spring of 2016, representatives of the Zurich Youth Hostel, who provide us with advice and support, will visit our location and familiarise the staff with the processes and requirements of the Youth Hostel. We are confident that we will be able to start operations in April 2016.
  • The main building and the residential building on the right are finished. You can almost see the finished ensemble in front of you
  • The solar panels are installed directly on the roof beams and thus save roof material at the same time

2015: Formale Eröffnung Teil 2

  • The interior furnishings are made by local businesses from local resources. Here the beds are made of coconut palm wood.
  • The hostel is also supplied locally.
  • The government is still very interested in the project.
  • The water tower for the buildings has already been erected. The pump is also already connected
  • The ground floors are finished
  • The procurement of these steel reinforcements had been delayed, so that work on the 1st floor began later than planned.
  • Now that all the material is available, work is progressing again here.
  • The bungalows around the central building are already nearing completion
  • Soon the work on the roofs can begin
  • Even in the current rainy season, work continues as far as possible
  • Work on all the new buildings is progressing well.

2015: Official opening Part 3

  • February 2015: Water supply from the well to the youth hostel
  • The water tower is ready
  • Access for the population as a matter of course
  • Arrival of the building material at the site of the youth hostel
  • Minister Harun informs the local population on site, the media (Zanzibar television) is also on site
  • In honour of the start of construction, a marathon, a bicycle race and a regatta are organised with great participation of the local population.
  • January 2015: The water supply system is completed in January and construction of the youth hostel begins at the same time. The existing government house is renovated and the other buildings are newly constructed.
  • Work on the well

2014: Project start

After long years, we now hope to start this important second step of our project. This year, the two members of the Makunduchi working group were on site. Nadia Kaegi in summer and Svenja Strahm at the end of the year for 3 months.
In summer 2014, the two plots of land for the school and the youth hostel were officially registered in Zanzibar's registry. As planned, the youth hostel will be built first and in a second step the associated vocational school. The architect in charge is Massawe, who has realised various buildings in Zanzibar.
Because our property is located directly by the sea, we could not find any fresh water. After a long search, drinking water was finally found at the end of 2014. However, the well for our hostel is dug in the village of Makunduchi, about 2 kilometres away. The water will flow through pipes to our property. We have installed a water tap for the local people to use freely.

2013: Solutions

The problems mentioned below and many more have often brought us to the edge of our possibilities. However, since we are convinced of the necessity of vocational training, we have continued to work on the solutions and finally, at the end of 2013, the registration in the land register took place.
On the construction planning side, too, we now have a coherent concept that we will realise step by step.
One positive effect of the delays is that the association had a significantly higher income than expenses over a longer period of time and now has the funds to carry out the first construction measures.
A big thank you to all donors.

2012: Problems

The vocational school project is much more extensive and complex than the project in Ndjani. There were several problems during the realisation. The registration of the association in the land register was promised again and again, but due to political changes it was postponed again and again. Without this registration, however, the construction work cannot begin.
Thankfully, various architects have become involved on our behalf. However, some of them underestimated the effort involved, so that in the end they were not able to keep up their voluntary work in the long run. The changes in this critical area, combined with the already very thin staffing of the association, have led to further delays.

2011: First steps Part 1

The land provided for the youth hostel with vocational school is located directly on Makunduchi beach. In the middle is a historic parliament building that is being renovated. It will be the restaurant of the youth hostel.
The government supports the project and is actively involved through a local sponsorship. The aim is to have this building licensed by the umbrella organisation of youth hostels (International Youth Hostel Federation IYHF).

2011: First steps Part 2

CAAA strives for sustainable development. The hostel should also be a sustainable enterprise, i.e. the social and economic conditions of the inhabitants of Zanzibar are improved and the intervention in the ecosystem is kept as low as possible. Besides an ecological construction method, the energy supply is ensured by solar energy and solar cookers are used in the kitchen. Rainwater is collected, filtered and used for showering, for example. Composting toilets prevent environmentally harmful waste water. In order to protect natural resources, staff and guests are sensitised to responsible use. On the one hand, efforts are made to recycle used resources, and on the other hand, when purchasing products, emphasis is placed on using them as sparingly and sustainably as possible.

2010: Preliminary studies

In mid-2010, Léa Frey and Luzia Güller wrote a thesis on the project at the International School of Tourism IST:

"Ecology, ethics and education under one roof using the example of a youth hostel in Zanzibar - promoting responsible tourism through education in a youth hostel with integrated vocational school.”

If interested in the project, the thesis can be requested from CAAA.

2010: First idea

After the successful start of the primary school in Ndijani in April 2009, CAAA started planning the second major project stage. CAAA President Nicolas Sarraj spoke with a landowner on Zanzibar who would like to make his property available for the construction of a youth hostel with an integrated vocational school. Young people and adults without vocational training are to be trained here in the fields of hotel business, gastronomy, fishing and agriculture. This in turn should make it easier for the population to find jobs on the market. Currently, the islanders are at a great disadvantage compared to people from the Tanzanian mainland due to the lack of professional training. With the Zanzibar Swiss School for Education and Professional Training, CAAA is handing the people of Zanzibar the key to independence.
