September: As about two thirds of the buildings are finished by now, we plan to open the youth hostel in October. Registrations can be made via Registration Youth Hostel Zanzibar.
After long years, we now hope to start this important second step of our project. This year, the two members of the Makunduchi working group were on site. Nadia Kaegi in summer and Svenja Strahm at the end of the year for 3 months.
In summer 2014, the two plots of land for the school and the youth hostel were officially registered in Zanzibar's registry. As planned, the youth hostel will be built first and in a second step the associated vocational school. The architect in charge is Massawe, who has realised various buildings in Zanzibar.
Because our property is located directly by the sea, we could not find any fresh water. After a long search, drinking water was finally found at the end of 2014. However, the well for our hostel is dug in the village of Makunduchi, about 2 kilometres away. The water will flow through pipes to our property. We have installed a water tap for the local people to use freely.
The problems mentioned below and many more have often brought us to the edge of our possibilities. However, since we are convinced of the necessity of vocational training, we have continued to work on the solutions and finally, at the end of 2013, the registration in the land register took place.
On the construction planning side, too, we now have a coherent concept that we will realise step by step.
One positive effect of the delays is that the association had a significantly higher income than expenses over a longer period of time and now has the funds to carry out the first construction measures.
A big thank you to all donors.
The vocational school project is much more extensive and complex than the project in Ndjani. There were several problems during the realisation. The registration of the association in the land register was promised again and again, but due to political changes it was postponed again and again. Without this registration, however, the construction work cannot begin.
Thankfully, various architects have become involved on our behalf. However, some of them underestimated the effort involved, so that in the end they were not able to keep up their voluntary work in the long run. The changes in this critical area, combined with the already very thin staffing of the association, have led to further delays.
The land provided for the youth hostel with vocational school is located directly on Makunduchi beach. In the middle is a historic parliament building that is being renovated. It will be the restaurant of the youth hostel.
The government supports the project and is actively involved through a local sponsorship. The aim is to have this building licensed by the umbrella organisation of youth hostels (International Youth Hostel Federation IYHF).
CAAA strives for sustainable development. The hostel should also be a sustainable enterprise, i.e. the social and economic conditions of the inhabitants of Zanzibar are improved and the intervention in the ecosystem is kept as low as possible. Besides an ecological construction method, the energy supply is ensured by solar energy and solar cookers are used in the kitchen. Rainwater is collected, filtered and used for showering, for example. Composting toilets prevent environmentally harmful waste water. In order to protect natural resources, staff and guests are sensitised to responsible use. On the one hand, efforts are made to recycle used resources, and on the other hand, when purchasing products, emphasis is placed on using them as sparingly and sustainably as possible.

In mid-2010, Léa Frey and Luzia Güller wrote a thesis on the project at the International School of Tourism IST:
"Ecology, ethics and education under one roof using the example of a youth hostel in Zanzibar - promoting responsible tourism through education in a youth hostel with integrated vocational school.”
If interested in the project, the thesis can be requested from CAAA.
After the successful start of the primary school in Ndijani in April 2009, CAAA started planning the second major project stage. CAAA President Nicolas Sarraj spoke with a landowner on Zanzibar who would like to make his property available for the construction of a youth hostel with an integrated vocational school. Young people and adults without vocational training are to be trained here in the fields of hotel business, gastronomy, fishing and agriculture. This in turn should make it easier for the population to find jobs on the market. Currently, the islanders are at a great disadvantage compared to people from the Tanzanian mainland due to the lack of professional training. With the Zanzibar Swiss School for Education and Professional Training, CAAA is handing the people of Zanzibar the key to independence.
