Touristic situation

Tourism offers great opportunities, but also risks for the inhabitants of Zanzibar. Surrounded by white coral sand beaches with palm trees and the turquoise sea, the island offers a wonderful sight. The colourful coral reefs hold a paradise for divers and snorkellers, while monkeys playing in the jungle can be marvelled at. The Arabic architecture gives the island an exotic setting with a magical atmosphere.
Due to the unique beauty of the island, large parts of the Zanzibar coast have rapidly developed into tourist centres in the last ten years. In this boom, the environment received little attention and many local village communities were displaced. To this day, most hotels are run by foreign investors who hardly consider the inhabitants of Zanzibar when allocating jobs, as they lack the required expertise due to a lack of basic education and training.
In order to break the unemployment in the long run and to use tourism as an opportunity also for the indigenous population, open access to education is indispensable.
